At our Delhi dojo, Sensei says ippon is a throw with perfect force, like a thunderclap—match over. Waza-ari is a powerful but not-quite-perfect throw, and two of those also win. Shido is a penalty for passivity, and if we’re tied, we fight in golden score where the first score wins. But honestly, I’ve only ever seen shidos—yesterday I got three for holding my breath and freezing, while the local champ looked bored.
