Pass no record means a first-semester MIT undergraduate can explore a class without a permanent grade or GPA impact. Only the passed courses appear as "P" on the external transcript; failures and withdrawals are not recorded. I insist you use this space to breathe, not just to retreat from a hard class. Because when I first came abroad, I was too afraid of a permanent mark to try for the lecture hall that later became my life's work.
