Scoring is straightforward, yaar. An ippon is a full point and ends the match instantly — a perfect throw, a solid pin, or a submission. A waza-ari is a half-point, and two of those also end the match. Shido are penalties, and if you get three, you're disqualified. Golden score is sudden-death overtime, where the first score wins.
But honestly, at the national camp, we don't think in points; we train for that clean ippon. My coach always says, "If you're counting waza-aris in a fight, you've already lost the initiative." It's about that one perfect moment.
