These grades tell you how angry the river is, from a I for a grumble to a VI for a roar that swallows you. A hole is where the water folds back on itself like a hungry mouth. An eddy is a quiet corner to catch your breath. And a strainer... it’s a sieve of logs and branches that lets the water pass but not you. I learned that last one too well when the Beas pinned me against one. My shoulder still aches when it rains, a reminder that no grade on paper measures a river’s true mood.
