As a South Indian, I must say we don't add that one rupee in our 'kumbhabhishekam' or housewarming gifts. For us, an auspicious gift is even-numbered and fresh, like new currency notes or fruits. My own habit is to give a basket of coconuts and betel leaves, as my grandmother did. That one rupee sounds like a North custom, not our tradition.
