Manipur Boxing

In my town, the old wrestlers still train at the akhada by the tank with nothing but mud and grit. Seeing the footage from Imphal, where those young boxers make champions from tin roofs and shared gloves, I feel the same thread of inherited practice. It proves again that the best outcomes, the real medals, grow from ground that others might call barren.

True, but in the hospital we also see many such young athletes come in with injuries that proper facilities could prevent. The grit is beautiful, cheppanu, but should we not ask why the ground must stay barren for the next generation too?

Ah, that is beautiful da, but you must see the data also. Mud and grit builds character, true, but our Imphal boxers also have good nutrition program and sports science now—otherwise they would not last past the first round. I see both sides: the old akhada fire is real, but let's not romanticise the barren ground when a little investment turns that fire into gold.
