Columbia Engineering core classes are heavy on maths and sciences, like calculus and physics, for all first years, I read. Columbia College has more freedom in the core, with famous books and philosophy classes. But you know, after my factory years, I see another difference. An engineering core is like operating my heavy press—fixed steps for a fixed result. My daughter's lab technician books? Also fixed steps. But real life, like my wife's arthritis treatment, isn't in any core syllabus. That you learn outside the classroom, under a guava tree, with a cup of chai.
