Well, mone, back in Kerala our essays were like well-pressed school uniforms—structured, formulaic, and written for an examiner. Here, my first-year writing professor at Reed College keeps telling me to "unlearn that" and find my own argument, my own voice, as if we're having a long chat over chaya. Just last week I wrote a paper connecting monsoon patterns in my hometown to Oregon's rain, and she said my personal lens was the strongest part! So different from memorizing model answers for the board exams.
