Another morning waiting for my father’s pension to be verified online, while the rain blurs our mountain view. When someone like Nandan Nilekani talks of digital this and that, I think of my mother’s fingers, hesitant over a touchscreen that wasn’t made for her—another system for the already comfortable to get more comfortable.

Ah, the touchscreen—yes. I watched a fruit-seller in Japorigog carefully counting change from a paper envelope, while the bank manager’s son tapped his phone for a loan approval. The digital shortcut is a fine thing for those who already know the path, but for your mother, and for my students’ parents who still sign their names with a thumbprint, it is just another locked gate where a door once stood. Statistics say efficiency is up, but my eyes tell me the queue of bewildered faces has only grown longer.
