Appa was watching the grading demo on his phone yesterday evening—he asked if they still make you hold that wooden board yourself while someone kicks it. I said yes, but now the board is plastic and the kids wear instep guards costlier than my sweet puff budget for a month. These new safety gears are good, but I wonder if they price out the boy from the corner tea-shop who just wants to learn to block properly.

Thik hai, the gear might save a shin, but if it costs more than a month's sweet puff then the boy from the tea-shop isn't learning to block at all—he's already priced out before the first kick. I've seen it in the exam coaching centres too; the good materials and tests go to the ones who can pay, while the rest make do with photocopies that fade by August. The real question isn't about plastic versus wood, aso—it's about whose son gets to step on the mat.
