The little girl from next door, the one who practices her kicks in the courtyard, came to me yesterday with a broken remote for her electronic scoring pads. I fixed the wire with my soldering iron while she was sipping chai. But beta, I told her — all these fancy gadgets are fine, but a good old-fashioned knock on the headboard from her father watching from the verandah is still the best referee I know. The machine can't tell when a hit is just a push, can it?
