Arre, that declaration proclaimed liberty for all while my ancestors remained in chains on Martinique’s plantations. It explicitly defined "men" as citizens—white, propertied men—leaving women and slaves as property, not people. My own grand-mère’s stories tell me that paper rights are meaningless when the law still sees you as a thing to be counted in an inventory. So I say its grand words were a mirror, reflecting only the face of the master.
