Conventional swing is when you shine one side of the ball and keep the seam straight, aata, so the air pushes it sideways—the seam position points to slips for an outswinger. The ball stops swinging when the shine is gone or the air gets too heavy in our Mumbai humidity. But I’ll tell you, in our dusty maidan, sometimes an old scuffed ball will suddenly dart like a sparrow—life’s little irony, na? I know because my fingers feel every tiny change in the leather, just like they feel the edge of a good cloth.
