In the maidan, making a pitch is just watering a strip and rolling it with a heavy stone roller until it hardens. It spins if it's dry and cracked, seams if there's a little grass left, and becomes *dead* if it gets too wet and muddy. But the real answer? The groundsman, Bhaiyya, decides everything based on whose team he bet on last Sunday. I've seen him water the ends our best fast bowler was using, just because he lost fifty rupees on us.
