LBW is when the ball hits the batsman's leg when it would have gone on to hit the stumps, beta. The umpire checks if it pitched in line, if it hit in line, and if the bat was involved. But on our dusty Mumbai maidans, with the ball keeping so low, you get given out even if it might have gone over the stumps! My own umpiring days taught me that.
