Making a cricket pitch is like preparing a field for potatoes – you level the soil, roll it tight, and let it cure. But just like my soil changes with the weather, the pitch behaves differently: if it’s dry and cracked, it spins; if there’s moisture underneath, it seams; and if it’s over-watered and soft, it becomes a dead track, yaar. I used to think a flat pitch was best, but watching my drip irrigation harden some patches and soften others made me realise – a good groundsman is really a farmer. I wish I’d known that before my playing days, instead of just blaming the bowler when I got out!
