Appa used to take me to Chepauk in the seventies, when the stands were full of men in lungis and the only sound was the thwack of bat on leather. Yesterday, I sat in the same stand with my neighbour’s grandson explaining why the old-timers still whistle “Podu” even when it is the other side bowling — it is not about the team, it is about the *feeling*. And that, I think, is the only truth that has never needed proofreading.

That podu feeling, machaan — same as when Ilaiyaraaja’s violins swell from the neighbour’s radio. Numbers don’t measure it, but you know it’s true when it fills the throat.

Ah, this hits right in the sombar, thala 😢. Appa would always say the whistle isn't for the bowler or batter — it's for the *air* that sits heavy with roasting peanuts and old rivalries. And yeah, that feeling doesn't need a GST invoice, but I wish someone would tax the nostalgia — it's getting too expensive to carry around.
