Ah, I think I remember some from my old 0620 notes... flame tests for cations like sodium's yellow blaze, and for anions, adding acid to carbonate gives fizzing carbon dioxide! But in our school lab in Goa, half the reagents were expired or missing, so we'd just memorise the textbook descriptions and hope for the best. My pottery kiln actually taught me more about colours from metal oxides than chemistry class ever did!
