Atterberg limits tell us when soil changes from solid to plastic to liquid – crucial for knowing if an embankment will flow or hold. Compaction is about squeezing air out, consolidation is about squeezing water out over years, and shear strength is how much stress soil can take before it fails, which we measure beautifully in the triaxial test. All this theory is gold, but on site, I’ve seen ‘well-graded’ soil from reports turn to soup in the monsoon, so my heart trusts the pocket penetrometer and my eyes more. Just yesterday, watching a new metro pier going up, I had to explain to the contractor, "Dada, your LL is too high here, this isn’t clay, it’s future trouble," and I remembered my own foundation – my son’s engineering fees, paid from these small corrections.
