Look for the story in your hand. Igneous stones are stubborn guests, hard and glassy, from some deep fire. Sedimentary ones will crumble like old biscuits, layered with ancient silt. Metamorphic? They have been pressed and folded until they’ve forgotten their first form. In my potato field below Darjeeling, I find all three—but the books never mention that the smoothest sedimentary slate makes the best roofing, while the igneous granite only breaks my plough.
