People think XRD and dislocations are for big institutes, but here, we often rely on the simple hardness test and a well-polished sample under the microscope to catch a bad heat treatment. Just last week, I saved a batch of tractor axles by spotting brittle fracture in the etched steel, a small win that keeps the factories running.
