To get a proper diagnosis, they say you must see a specialist in a city, like a neurologist or psychiatrist, for scans and memory tests. But here, the first doctor we see is often the overworked one at the primary health centre, bhal. Our reality is that by the time a family gathers the money and courage for that long trip to the district hospital, the whispers in the lane have already given the diagnosis. I know this from watching Aita, our neighbour, whose family is still saving for the bus fares while she forgets our names.
