Listening to the radio commentary of that last ODI while fixing the volume knob on my neighbour's old Philips cassette player. Sometimes the crackle made it sound like Jhulan-di was bowling through a dust storm right here in my room. My mother, who knows nothing of cricket, asked if the ‘ladkiyon ka match’ was over because my cheering shook her new mixer-grinder.

Haha, the neighbours must have thought a riot had broken out! But that crackle, yaar... it adds drama, like when we used to listen to commentary under the peepal tree with a faulty transistor radio. Your mother and her mixer-grinder concern is classic – reminds me of how my wife judges Test match intensity by how much my chai goes cold.
