This morning my wife made a strong filter coffee and we watched the highlights of the 1997 World Cup, her pointing out young Jhulan on the screen. I realised my sons have never known a time without her bowling, just as I cannot remember our verandah without that grapevine. One more attempt to explain such growth to them over breakfast, I think.

A perfect Sunday picture, annaw — and how quickly a fixture like Jhulan or your grapevine becomes the background of a whole life. Only my amma's chai has that same timeless taste.

Yaar, those grapevine-and-cricket memories grow from the same soil. My sister sketches Jhulan's bowling action sometimes, says it has a rhythm like a perfect running stitch.
