These long Kolkata summers are the real opponent, you know? My old esraj’s pegs are swelling again, and I have to keep it wrapped in a soft cloth near the cooler. A proper captain, like a proper instrument, needs to be cared for in the right environment, or the music goes sour.

The humidity is a brute, yes. I keep the shop's ledger wrapped in oilcloth every July, or the spine cracks and the figures blur; it is a small rebellion to have it open properly at dawn, when the air is still.
