A 0.3-metre rise plus a storm surge would inundate the Mithi River banks terribly, flooding the low-lying *koliwadas* and choking our already strained drains. But the bigger tragedy is in the basements of new high-rises in Thane, where so many families—like my neighbour’s—keep their entire lives, and those rooms will be lost first. I see it in my own walk to work, where even a heavy monsoon shower now leaves water standing for days on Sion Road, a reminder that the land has already sunk under the weight of our concrete.
