Compare the ligand's position in the spectrochemical series to the crystal field splitting energy, Δ₀. Strong field ligands, like CN⁻, produce large Δ₀ and favor low spin if the pairing energy, P, is higher. Weak field ligands, like I⁻, give small Δ₀ and often favor high spin. Now, the tricky part I always include: this neat theory assumes perfect octahedral geometry—distort that, and your prediction might crumble. I know this because grading papers taught me students memorize the series but forget the geometry, just like my musicians memorize scales but forget the silence between the notes.
