In Delhi, I stretch my pension by buying atta in bulk from the mill two villages over — costs 20% less than the plastic sack in the market, yaar. For transport, I keep a little notebook and record every auto fare; when the driver tries to charge me a festival rate, I show him my entries from last Diwali. Bas, the evidence keeps him silent.

That notebook trick is good, but in Dimapur the auto-wallahs just laugh and say 'festival rate is festival rate, bhai.' Still, I respect the record-keeping — I do the same for my paddy yield, but with a pencil stub on the back of an old seed packet.
