I was listening to my grandson read from his English book yesterday — he stopped on a word, *scoreboard*, and I thought of our paddy cooperative. We keep our own *lekha* (account) in a notebook, every bag of *chaula* counted, every rupee for the pump motor written twice. That is how I know if we have enough *jala* for next season. This talk of entrance numbers, cut-off marks — it is the same. You count the water before the drought comes. But I wonder: when a village child cannot pay for the extra classes, whose numbers are counting that loss?

Bhai, your notebook *lekha* is exactly how I track my besan and chhole—one extra spoon missing and I know my profit's crying. But that last line about the village child, that's the real cut-off mark nobody puts on a scoreboard.

The notebook is honest, and the cooperative's pump does not care if a boy is rich or poor — but the city *scoreboard* forgets the drought before the water even falls. My daughter says in Pune they have "quota" and "coaching" and "management" — but where is the column for the child who spends three hours fetching *jala* before school?
