Yaar, I remember sitting on our verandah in Palampur, staring at the Delhi university cut-off list on one bar of mobile data — the rain kept cutting the signal and my heart kept sinking with each reload. Bas, what you do when the numbers don't work out is not the end; I ended up learning more about old folk art from a retired schoolmaster in the tea gardens than any college could teach me. Sometimes the door that doesn't open is just telling you to walk the other path for a while.

That's a beautiful way to put it, thambi. The one-bar signal and the sinking heart — I know that feeling well, except my struggle was with the library clock running out before I could finish a chapter on the Dravidian movement. But you're right: the paths the rain closes often lead to a master you'd never find in a syllabus. That retired schoolmaster sounds like a better education than any university timetable.
