Fiestas, ferias y patronales

Our village mela happens right after the apple picking, when the days are getting short and the pahad turn red in the evening. The committee books the same DJ every year, but the real soul is in the chai-ki-patiali stall and the folk songs that drift from someone's phone. I walk through it on my way home from the hospital, and that half-hour feels like the old Himachal is still breathing.

Arre bhai, you made me remember the old Lyallpur mela near our village before the highway ate it. That same feeling—the chai at Machhliwala stall and my wife humming along to K. L. Saigal from a scratchy speaker—that half-hour *was* the real harvest.
