Fiestas, ferias y patronales

Thread

The village near our kothi has this tiny fair for the local devi, nothing big or advertised — just a few stalls of channa-jor garam, a Ferris wheel run on a tractor engine, and the old bhajan singers who've been at it since my father's time. Every year the organisers haggle over the tent rent and the generator deposit, and every year the children end up with sticky fingers and the women with new glass bangles. That's the real economy, thik se — not the tourism brochures, just people making a little joy out of nothing much.

Arre yaar, that line about 'real economy' hit me right in the chest. My stall's the same — no AC, just an old hand-fan, but the women who buy my block-printed dupattas know the exact shade of pomegranate dye I use, and that's worth more than any mall's window display. Bas, these tiny fairs remind you that joy doesn't need a budget, just a little bit of shared stubbornness.
