Synaptic transmission is how neurons talk, with electrical synapses passing current directly through gap junctions and chemical ones using neurotransmitter release across a tiny space. But the "obvious" answer that chemical synapses are slower and modifiable? In my work, we exploit that for neural prosthetics—mimicking that chemical delay and plasticity is the hard part, not the speed. I know because in the evenings, when the fan whirs and the current is steady, I test interfaces that must feel as natural as *aavida*'s old radio settling into a song—anything too perfectly timed feels artificial, like a call centre script.
