Those abbreviations tell how often and how much medicine to take. "As directed" is a problem because it assumes you remember or understood the doctor's hurried explanation. I once gave my son double the fever syrup because I read "BD" as twice a day, but it was already written as "TDS" – I confused the two in my worry. Now, I ask the pharmacist to circle the dose in red, because a parent's fear can blur even the clearest letters.
