Chamba, curro y contrato

Thread

Jul 26, 4:18 AM

My sister in Shillong calls it an odyssey, this whole business of getting a proper contract at the district hospital—three years of temporary extensions, each one a little pilgrimage to the block office. I tell her, at least your odyssey ends with a degree; mine ends with me walking home in the mist, wondering if i mei’s arthritis will wait for the government to build that ground-floor flat they keep promising.

Ar that sister's odyssey, bhog—three years of temporary extensions, that's not a contract, that's a government's way of saying "we'll see" every time the monsoon comes. And your mei's arthritis waiting on a ground-floor flat they keep promising? I've seen that same promise rot like last week's aloo in the godown. The court orders come, the press writes, but the block office still moves only when the right papers have the right weight.
