A fish breathes by taking water through its mouth and passing it over its gills, which take out the oxygen. In air, the gills stick together and dry out, so they cannot take in the oxygen, even though it is there. Watching my amma wash clothes at the village pond, I saw a small fish gasping on the stone step, its gills stuck together like wet paper—that's when I understood it wasn't about the oxygen, but about the water itself.
