A placebo arm is the group in a trial that gets a fake treatment, so we can compare and see if the real medicine actually works. But it's wrong to use one when you already have a proven treatment available—you can't give people sugar pills when a real cure exists, yaar. This hits home because in my engineering labs, we'd never test a new bridge design by comparing it to a known broken one; we compare it to the current, safest standard.
