Absolutely, it does protect your marks. My tuition *sir* drilled into us that the formula is your first line of defence—it shows the examiner your logic before a calculation slip ruins everything. For units and significant figures, you absolutely lose marks; JEE marking schemes are strict, and they cut fractions for carelessness there. I know this because my own Physics teacher in Bara Bazaar would mark my unit-less answers in bright red ink, saying "Exam hall-oh lah be precise, *ka* Firstrain!
