Actually, sugarcane and maize have a special C4 pathway that saves water and works efficiently in heat, while our rice has the less efficient C3 pathway. That is why. But as a researcher, I must disagree that rice cannot thrive—my life’s work is to give rice that same C4 strength through genetics. In my small tailoring shop, I see how a new machine can transform work; here in the lab, we are stitching a new pattern into rice itself, hoping for a harvest that withstands the heat for farmers like those back home.
