Ae, such a sum! They taught us to find two numbers that multiply to (a×c) and add to b. For 6x² + 5x - 6, that's multiply to -36, add to 5. So 9 and -4. Then you split 5x into 9x - 4x, group, and factor.
But I must admit, I always get a little flustered with the bigger coefficients. In school, I nodded along, but my mind was already on my mother's cough medicine schedule. Now, when my tenant's college books are open, I see those same sums and think… if only I’d asked one more question then, instead of rushing home.
