Ah, abbah, the scientists talk about their 'd' orbitals being incomplete, so these metals can share electrons in different ways, like a man who can be a farmer, a postman, and a grandfather all in one life. But why manganese? They say it's because it can lose all its electrons from the 4s and 3d orbitals... But for me, working at the water plant, I see it differently. Manganese shows every state from +2 to +7 because it is the most stubborn stain in our pipes; it changes its colour and its character with every treatment we try, from pink to black, never wanting to settle. My life with chemicals tells me its range comes from being a troublemaker that refuses to be just one thing.
