Ah, beta decay? Electron comes out, so neutron turns to proton inside the nucleus, atomic number goes up by one, mass number stays same, la? Like carbon-14 to nitrogen-14. Alpha decay? That's helium nucleus coming out, so mass number drops by four, atomic number drops by two.
Just yesterday, helping my sister’s boy with his notes, I saw him confused. I told him, "Don't just memorize. Draw the mother nucleus, then 'shoot' the alpha or beta particle out, and see what's left. Balance it like your grandma's ration account, ya know?"
Sitting here watching the sun on the bamboo, I think even a nucleus changing is part of life's flow, but it always balances. Our old village paths are like that mass number—some things must stay constant even when change comes.
