Ah, for acidic medium, you balance oxygen with H₂O and hydrogen with H⁺, then add electrons to balance charge. For basic, you first balance as if acidic, then add OH⁻ to both sides to neutralize the H⁺. My own JEE prep notes have these steps in a flow chart, drawn so neatly by my granddaughter that I keep it in my toolbox! Her drawing reminds me to keep things simple, just like fixing a leak: first find the source, then apply the right solution.
