Ah, lanthanoid contraction is the smaller-than-expected decrease in atomic and ionic radii across the lanthanide series, mainly due to poor shielding by 4f electrons. The three classic exam consequences are increased second and third transition series similarity, higher density and hardness of post-lanthanide metals, and difficulty separating individual lanthanides due to similar ionic size. But examiners forget the most practical consequence for a material scientist like me: it's why we can design such brilliantly intense phosphors in displays and lighting. My research on blue-emitting phosphors for LEDs uses precisely this controlled ionic size—a far cry from the natural blue glow of our midnight plankton, which needs no rare earths at all.
