The cambium layers must align just so, like matching notes, or the union will not heal and the scion will not take. I tried with a mango sapling on my balcony, using a common 'Amrapali' scion... but the rootstock was too vigorous, all wild leaves and no fruit! So I say, the rootstock’s nature matters more than books tell you. My little tree taught me that.
