Ah, "raises risk by 40%" sounds alarming, but for us older folks, we need to see the real numbers. If the usual risk is, say, 10 people out of 1000, a 40% raise means just 4 more people—so 14 per thousand. That 'number needed to treat of 104' means you’d treat 104 of us to prevent one case.
At our centre, I see numbers on grant applications all the time. But when the doctor told me this for a new pill, I thought of our old roof. We spend so much to fix it for every monsoon, but some years the rain isn't so bad. Sometimes the "treatment" feels bigger than the leak it’s trying to stop.
