Ah, such a question for an old nurse from Kerala who has only ever seen ice in hospital trays! Snow turns to glacier ice under the weight of new snow over centuries, squeezing out the air. The old ice looks blue because it absorbs the other colours of light, you see. But I must disagree that old ice is merely blue — to me, it looks like the washed, faded blue of my mother's favourite *mundu*, the one she wore for years until it was thin and soft. That blue speaks of time and pressure, not just science.
