But life taught me something else in this dry Rajasthan soil: sometimes a vigorous, local rootstock from a tough seedling can make a fussy variety from Goa sit up and thrive, even when the books say it is not perfectly matched. My Neelam mango here, grafted onto a hardy local rootstock, bore fruit when my perfectly 'compatible' Alphonso from back home did not.
