Ah, that carrying is tricky, but I think of it like helping my father count tea leaves into sacks. When I add 8 and 5 ones, I get 13, which is too many to keep in the ones column. So I trade ten of those ones for a single ten, like bundling ten small packets into one bigger bag, and move that ten over. This leaves 3 ones with me and I add the carried ten with the other tens. My maths teacher, Borah Sir, showed us with bundles of sticks, but I understand it better from the tea garden counts.
