Ah, that photorespiration... it is like RuBisCO, the main enzyme for making food in plants, gets confused in the hot sun and starts using oxygen instead of carbon dioxide. It burns energy instead of making it, ya. They say it is inefficient.
But for me, the real inefficiency is in the field. I planted those new, high-yield varieties they said were so clever. But in our Khasi monsoon, when the sun plays hide-and-seek, they are weak. They drink all my water and then gasp in the light, while the old, sturdy local rice just carries on making food. The waste is not in the leaf, but in listening to those city papers instead of my own soil.
